Statement by Minister Ploumen on EU-Japan agreement in principle

The agreement in principle that the European Commission and Japan are now discussing contains several important elements for the Netherlands. However, no agreement has yet been reached on a number of key issues, including a modern, transparent and independent investment protection system. We will therefore wait until everything has been finalised before giving our opinion. We will of course have in-depth talks with the Commission on this matter in the coming period, for example in the EU Trade Ministers Council.

The Commission has announced that the agreement in principle will soon be published online. We welcome this form of transparency, as it will enable all interested citizens, organisations and businesses to express their views on the current text of the economic partnership agreement.
