Prime minister meets with French president and prime ministers of Luxembourg and Belgium

Today Prime Minister Mark Rutte spoke with French president Emmanuel Macron, Luxembourg prime minister Xavier Bettel and Belgian prime minister Charles Michel. Read Mr Rutte’s comments on the meeting below:

‘Today I met with President Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and Prime Minister Charles Michel in Luxembourg at the start of the European political season. In the months ahead there will be many issues on the European agenda, and today we were able to discuss and coordinate on several key topics.

One topic at the top of the agenda is migration. It’s important that we take further steps based on the agreements we made back in June. Three elements are essential: tackling the root causes of migration, agreeing on how to deal with migrants rescued in the Mediterranean and working to reform the Common European Asylum System. It won’t be easy to find a unified approach, but ultimately we all need to take responsibility in each of these different areas.’
