Commemorative Medals for Peacekeeping Operations awarded during anniversary ceremony
In recognition of their contribution to peacekeeping operations across the globe, 36 police officers, members of the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee and civil experts were today awarded the Commemorative Medal for International Missions. After the official opening of the ceremony by Minister of Justice and Security Grapperhaus, the medals were handed out by Chief of the Netherlands Defence Staff Rob Bauer, National Police Chief Erik Akerboom and Secretary-General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Joke Brandt.
Today's event at the World Forum in The Hague marked the 10th occasion in a row that the commemorative medals have been awarded during a joint ceremony. The decorated personnel contributed to greater security and stability in such countries as Mali, Ukraine, Kosovo, Somalia and Afghanistan. Among other things, they helped tackle cross-border organised crime, reinforce local government institutions and establish the rule of law.
All the decorated personnel's children aged under 16 were awarded a children's medal in recognition of their support back home.
