Press conference by Rutte and Grapperhaus on shooting in Utrecht
Press conference by Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Minister of Justice and Security Ferdinand Grapperhaus on shooting in Utrecht.
Ladies and gentlemen, today our country was shocked by an attack in Utrecht. The police and Public Prosecution Service are investigating exactly what happened. What we know so far is that shots were fired at passengers on a tram in Utrecht. Several people were injured, and some may have been killed. Terrorist motives cannot be ruled out. Initial reports arouse a sense of disbelief and horror. Violence has suddenly shattered the lives of innocent people. Our thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones. We will now do our utmost to catch the person or persons responsible as soon as possible. That is our main priority. An act of terror is an attack on our civilised values. On our tolerant and open society. If this does turn out to be a terrorist attack, there is only one response possible: we must show that our democratic society, governed by the rule of law, is stronger than fanaticism and violence. We will never yield to intolerance.
Ladies and gentlemen, our main priority is to catch the person or persons responsible for the attack. The National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism has announced that threat level 5 will apply in the province of Utrecht until 6 o'clock this evening. In the rest of the Netherlands, threat level 4 applies. This means that the local authorities will be visibly present and on the alert. The government will give every possible support to the authorities in the province of Utrecht, who are working hard to catch the attacker or attackers. I call on everyone to closely follow any instructions issued by the authorities. Be as vigilant as possible, but remain calm. The crisis team will meet again at 5 pm and we will then provide further information. Thank you.
