Extradition treaty with Morocco strengthens approach to organised crime
With a bilateral extradition treaty, the Netherlands and Morocco are strengthening the joint approach to cross-border organised crime. Minister Yeşilgöz-Zegerius of Justice and Security writes to the Dutch House of Representatives today that an official agreement has been reached on an extradition treaty. The text of the treaty will be prepared for signature in the coming months. It is expected that the treaty can be signed and submitted to the Dutch House of Representatives for approval in the autumn.
“Organised crime crosses all our borders. International drug crime continuously shifts smuggling routes and criminal assets are put away in other countries at lightning speed in order to stay out of the hands of investigation services. Only by cooperating more with other countries we can unravel and destroy these internationally operating criminal networks”,
said Minister Yeşilgöz-Zegerius.
The bilateral treaty with Morocco broadens the number of offences for which extradition is possible between the two countries and includes specific agreements on procedures so that more and more efficient cooperation is possible. Even after entering into a bilateral treaty, each request for extradition is assessed and reviewed separately on the basis of legal and treaty-law frameworks.
