Interior and Kingdom Relations transfer protocol signed

Outgoing minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations Ernst Hirsch Ballin and incoming minister Piet Hein Donner signed the transfer protocols on Thursday 14 October at the Ministry’s headquarters.

They did so in the presence of outgoing minister for Housing, Communities and Integration Eimert van Middelkoop, outgoing state secretary for the Interior and Kingdom Relations Ank Bijleveld, and the new Immigration minister Gerd Leers.

The new minister of the Interior, Mr Donner, thanked the outgoing Cabinet members. Both the outgoing and the incoming Cabinet members then toasted the transfer.

The transfer also involves an exchange of duties between the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Public Safety and Justice. Mr Leers will be in charge of immigration and asylum. Specifically, this concerns aliens and asylum policy falling within the remit of the Ministry of Justice, including the Immigration and Naturalisation Service, the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers, the Repatriation and Departure Service, border control in alien affairs and the Kingdom Act on the Movement of Persons. Responsibility for the Netherlands Nationality Act lies with Mr Donner.

Except for the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD), the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations will hand over its public safety tasks to the Ministry of Public Safety and Justice.

The programme assigned to the minister for Housing, Communities and Integration will not be continued as such. The various duties in this area will be transferred in their entirety to Mr Donner, who will also be responsible for the Government Buildings Agency.
