HNLMS Karel Doorman and army engineers to set course for the Caribbean
The Netherlands is sending the Joint Logistic Support Ship HNLMS Karel Doorman to the Caribbean to provide support following Hurricane Irma. The ship will primarily be used to transport equipment and aid supplies by sea.
The Karel Doorman has cut short its involvement in the international Northern Coasts exercise and is currently en route to the Dutch naval port of Den Helder, where it is expected to arrive on Friday morning.
The supplies the ship is carrying in connection with the exercise will be unloaded and aid supplies taken on board. The Karel Doorman is expected to depart for the Caribbean on Wednesday 20 September and arrive there approximately two weeks later.
Emergency repairs by reconstruction team
The Royal Netherlands Army is also deploying more than 100 troops to St Maarten to carry out emergency repairs. This reconstruction team, consisting of army engineers, will help set up emergency facilities which will form the basis for future structural repairs.
