Additional evacuation flights from St Maarten
An aircraft departed today for St Maarten from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to evacuate people requiring medical assistance, tourists of all nationalities and others who do not live on the hurricane-hit island. This additional evacuation capacity has been made available in collaboration with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.
The KLM Boeing 747 with capacity for 268 passengers will first fly to Curaçao to pick up staff and aid supplies. This weekend the aircraft will continue to St Maarten, from where people will be evacuated to Aruba. Ministry of Foreign Affairs staff will be on board to oversee the evacuation.
So far over 3,800 people have been evacuated from St Maarten, 1,400 of whom were moved out by the Dutch armed forces.
