Foreign Minister Kaag on working visit to Qatar

This morning Minister of Foreign Affairs Sigrid Kaag met with her Qatari counterpart, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, in Doha to discuss the developments in Afghanistan. She also spoke with German foreign minister Heiko Maas.

Ms Kaag and her Qatari counterpart talked about the future of Afghanistan and the current humanitarian situation. They also discussed the importance of stability in Afghanistan and of working together to combat terrorism and to achieve an inclusive government. They underlined their support for the people of Afghanistan and the importance of respect for human rights.

The Dutch foreign minister emphasised that the Netherlands is doing everything it can to resume the evacuation of those who are eligible for departure, and to support the Afghan people. With that in mind, the two ministers discussed the importance of reopening Kabul airport as soon as possible. Ms Kaag also announced in Doha that the Kabul embassy is being temporarily relocated to Qatar.

Ms Kaag also spoke with German foreign minister Heiko Maas this morning about the importance of cooperation on security and stability in the region. The Netherlands and Germany are working together with their partners to ensure the safe passage of the two countries’ citizens and of at-risk Afghan nationals.
