As a British national, will I need a work permit to work in the Netherlands after Brexit?

December 24th, 4 pm 2020: The information on this page will possibly be updated in accordance with the partnership between the EU and the UK.

As a British national, you may work in the Netherlands without a work permit until 31 December 2020. The year 2020 is a transition period during which all existing EU rules will continue to apply to British nationals. After 31 December 2020 the requirements may be different, depending on the date of your arrival in the Netherlands.

You came to the Netherlands on or before 31 December 2020

If you came to the Netherlands on or before 31 December 2020, you are covered by the withdrawal agreement. You may continue to work in the Netherlands without a work permit after 31 December 2020 provided you have a residence permit. The Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) will be sending letters to all British nationals registered in the Netherlands inviting them to apply for a residence permit. The IND will be spreading these letters across the year, rather than sending them out to everyone at once. Once you receive your letter, you then have until 1 July 2021 to apply for a residence permit.

You will be coming to the Netherlands after 31 December 2020

If you will be coming to the Netherlands after 31 December 2020, you are not covered by the withdrawal agreement. In that case you will be subject to the Dutch regulations that govern working in the Netherlands. If you will be working in the Netherlands for less than 90 days, your employer must apply for an employment permit for you (Dutch) from the Employee Insurance Agency (UWV). If you will be working in the Netherlands for more than 90 days, your employer must apply for a combined residence and work permit for you (Dutch) from the IND.

When a work permit isn’t required after 2020

After the 2020 transition period, EU rules will no longer apply to British nationals. You will then be subject to the rules applicable to non-EU nationals. As a British national, there will still be certain situations in which you won’t need an employment permit or combined residence and work permit. Click here for a list of situations in which British nationals don’t need a work permit (Dutch) to work in the Netherlands. Residence permits are always required for stays in the Netherlands of more than 90 days
