Rutte responds to murder of Wiels

Prime minister Mark Rutte has expressed the government's condemnation of the murder of Helmin Wiels, the leader of Curaçao's largest political party. 'Much is still unclear, but nothing can justify such a cowardly act,' he said.

Last night, shortly after the killing, Mr Rutte phoned Curaçao's prime minister Daniel Hodge and conveyed the condolences of the Dutch people.

Mr Rutte wished Mr Wiels' children, his supporters and the people of Curaçao every strength at this time of grief and sorrow. 'Curaçao has lost a passionate politician,' he said. 'A man who fought for his beliefs and ideals, and above all loved his country.'
