Child abuse is a serious problem in the Netherlands. Every year, an estimated 119,000 children suffer some form of child abuse. The Action Plan against Child Abuse (Kinderen Veilig) which the government presented on 28 November 2011 forms the basis for action to tackle this problem in the next five years

All children have equal rights. These rights are described in the International Convention on the Rights of the Child. This convention states that children have a right to receive care, protection and respect. A special children’s ombudsman has the task of ensuring that the rights of children and young people in the Netherlands are respected.
