Oranjestad and the Hague join forces in build-up to Paris climate summit
In Toronto, Canada, Prime Minister Eman of Aruba and Dutch Minister Mansveld (Environment) spoke about the collaboration between the Netherlands and Aruba in the build-up to the major climate conference later this year. Aruba is included in the delegation that will represent the Kingdom of the Netherlands at the COP21 in Paris.
Premier Eman is in Toronto as one of the Keynote Speakers at the International Economic Forum of the Americas. Minister Mansveld will speak at the Climate Summit of the Americas on CO2 prices aimed at combating climate change and on the economic opportunities of tackling climate change.
Minister Mansveld: ‘In recent years, Aruba has made great progress in the transition to energy independence. Aruba is demonstrating that climate action and growth go together quite well. Thus, they set a good example to other islands in the Caribbean that would be vulnerable in a world affected by a warming of more than two degrees.’
For several years, the Aruban government has been working with Richard Branson’s Carbon War Room. Its aim is for Aruba to attain full climate-neutrality by 2020. ´The Rocky Mountain Institute, Dutch TNO and the American Department of Energy have joined forces with Aruba to achieve this goal,’ according to Prime Minister Eman. This would make Aruba the first sustainable economy in the world to extract all its energy from non-conventional sources.
Prior to COP21, on 26-27 October 2015, the Carbon War Room, the Rocky Mountain Institute and Aruba will jointly organise a Learning Event for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) on this topic.
