Christiana Figueres Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau

Today, Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), was knighted as an Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau. Minister Schultz van Haegen of Infrastructure and the Environment presented her with the Royal Honour, shortly before the start of the three-day Adaptation Futures climate conference in Rotterdam.

Minister Schultz praised Ms Figueres for her unflagging efforts in the run-up to the Paris Climate Agreement (December 2015). ‘After the lack of confidence at the Copenhagen climate summit, you spent seven years working tirelessly on an agreement based on trust and collaboration. Not just among countries, but also among governments and the private sector. You helped widen the focus to include climate adaptation: we will need to adapt to global climate change. Both in the spotlight and behind the screens you have shown character, a vast determination to build a world with opportunities and development for everyone.’

Ms Figueres is approaching the end of her term as Secretary of the UNFCCC. This is her final visit to the Netherlands in that capacity.
