Order of vaccination for health and care workers

The first professionals in healthcare and social care to be vaccinated against coronavirus have been those who care for COVID-19 patients, or work in nursing homes, disability care, homecare, social support services and mental healthcare. At the end of January 2021 vaccination of family doctors (GPs) also began.

Order of vaccination subject to change

The order of vaccination may change if, for example, there are delays in vaccine deliveries.

Health and care workers aged 18 and over

For all categories, only people aged 18 and over will be vaccinated. This includes:

  • doctors;
  • work placement students;
  • trainees;
  • agency workers;
  • self-employed people working for a care provider.

In this context, volunteers and informal carers are not regarded as health and care workers. They will receive an invitation on the basis of criteria (age, health situation) that apply to the rest of the population. See the vaccination schedule for the rest of the population in the Netherlands.

Appointment can be made after receiving invitation from employer

Health and care workers must wait until they receive a personal invitation from their employer before making an appointment to get vaccinated.

Order of vaccination for categories of health and care workers

On 6 January 2021 vaccination of health and care workers in nursing homes and small-scale residential homes began. From February, health and care workers in the following categories will receive an invitation in the order shown:

  1. health and care workers in nursing homes and small-scale residential homes who have not yet been vaccinated, and those working in specialist inpatient rehabilitation units;
  2. disability care workers;
  3. homecare workers;
  4. social support (WMO) workers;
  5. care workers financed from a personal budget (PGB) (under the Chronic Care Act (WLZ), the Health Insurance Act (ZVW) or for home help under the Social Support Act (WMO)).

The number of health and care workers in the first 3 categories is approximately the same as the number of vaccines available in February 2021.
