71 patients deceased, 35 new patients, a total of 42,093 confirmed cases
Hospital admissions for 35 patients due to COVID-19 were reported today (current or previous). 71 deaths were reported. Not all of the reported hospital admissions or deaths occurred within the last 24 hours. Some patients are reported later. For this reason, the figures are often supplemented with data from days in the past.
42,093 confirmed COVID-19 patients have been reported to RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment so far. The figures are in line with the impression that the measures are working. Since not all COVID-19 patients are tested, the actual numbers in the Netherlands are higher than the numbers stated here.
Change in how hospitalisations are registered as of 8 May
Normal hospital care is gradually being resumed. As a precaution, hospitals are increasingly testing people for the novel coronavirus, even if they are hospitalised for a reason other than COVID-19. These tests are being done to prevent the spread of COVID-19 within the hospital. For that reason, since 1 May, when a patient tests positive for COVID-19, the reason for the hospitalisation is also requested when the confirmed case is reported.
From 8 May on, new hospital admissions will only be included in the hospital admissions updates if COVID-19 is the reason for hospitalisation. The reports of patients who are admitted to hospital for another reason, and who turn out during screening to also have COVID-19, will be added to the total number of confirmed cases.
