State Secretary Teeven to visit the United Kingdom
On Tuesday 11 and Wednesday 12 January, State Secretary of Security and Justice Teeven will pay a working visit to the United Kingdom. During his visit, the State Secretary wants to gather information about the functioning of private prisons in the United Kingdom.
The Dutch government announced in the coalition agreement that preparations will be made to privatize certain tasks that are relevant to the prison system. The aim is to improve cost effectiveness. In that connection, the Research and Documentation Centre of the Ministry of Security and Justice was asked to investigate the experiences gained in several countries with the privatization of their prison system. As announced in the coalition agreement, this inquiry will especially concern the United Kingdom. The inquiry should be completed by the middle of this year.
The State Secretary will inter alia visit the HMP Peterborough prison. He will also meet the British State Secretary for the prison system, Crispin Blunt.
