Koenders closes consulate-general in Istanbul as precautionary measure
This morning foreign minister Bert Koenders made the decision to temporarily close the Dutch consulate-general in Istanbul as a precaution in light of a possible terrorist threat. He advised Dutch people in the city to avoid the immediate vicinity of the consulate-general (located at Istiklal Caddesi 197) and to keep abreast of developments.
‘The safety of my staff and of visitors to our consulate is our first priority,’ Mr Koenders said. ‘For obvious reasons no further information can be divulged about the nature of the threat or underlying intelligence.’
The consul-general and around 40 members of staff were evacuated from the building and will continue their work as far as possible at alternative premises.
The latest developments will be announced on Twitter: @DutchMFA.
