Verhagen to attend UN General Assembly in New York
Foreign minister Maxime Verhagen leaves on 21 September for the annual week-long General Assembly of the United Nations (UNGA) in New York.
During the week, he will attend various meetings and conduct some 20 rounds of bilateral talks. Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende will also attend and is scheduled to address the General Assembly. The Netherlands plans to focus primarily on the issues of human rights, climate change, the situation in the Middle East and the United Nations itself. Mr Verhagen's itinerary will include chairing a meeting of countries active in Southern Afghanistan, and both Mr Balkenende and Mr Verhagen will have bilateral meetings with counterparts from other countries.
