Timmermans on working visit to Sweden

On 26 November, Minister for European Affairs Frans Timmermans will be in Sweden on a working visit. The trip forms part of the preparations for Sweden’s Presidency of the European Union, which begins on 1 July 2009.

Mr Timmermans will meet his Swedish counterpart Cecilia Malmström in Stockholm, where they will discuss the upcoming Presidency’s priorities, such as the Eastern Partnership and the Lisbon Strategy. They will also consider issues that will be on the agenda at the next European Council, including the climate and energy package and the global financial crisis.

During the visit Mr Timmermans will also meet Swedish environment minister Andreas Carlgren to discuss European strategy on climate change. Greenhouse gas emissions are high on the agenda: the EU needs to achieve a 20% reduction in emissions by 2020. In late 2009, during the Swedish Presidency, the 14th United Nations Climate Change Conference will be held in Copenhagen. At the summit the EU wants to negotiate an international agreement to succeed the Kyoto Protocol, which expires at the end of 2012.
