Surname change charges raised to cover the costs

In 2011, the charges for changing one’s surname will be raised to EUR 835 to cover the costs. The Council of Ministers has agreed to this on the recommendation of State Secretary of Security and Justice Teeven.

Because the charges had not been raised since 1987, it was decided to increase them gradually until they cover the costs. This is in line with the government’s retrenchment policy. The charges currently amount to EUR 487.50. This amount does not cover the costs, however, so that surname changes structurally cost extra.

Another reason for raising the charges is the decreasing number of applications in the past few years. It is expected that 2,250 surname change applications will be submitted in 2011, compared to 3,671 in 2009 and 2,677 in 2010.

The Council of Ministers has agreed to send the draft decree to the Council of State for its opinion. The text of the decree will be made public on publication in the Bulletin of Acts and Decrees.
