Joke Smit award for gender equality

Every two years the government awards the Joke Smit award to those who have made a fundamental contribution to improve the position of women in the Netherlands.

Incentive award for women's advancement

The first incentive award for women's empowerment was presented in 2011. It is awarded to a person, group or institution that is doing or has done inspiring work to improve the position of women or girls in society. The winner received a work of art and a cash prize of €1,000.

Who was Joke Smit?

The award is named after feminist Joke Smit (1933-1981), who played a pioneering role in the women's liberation movement in the Netherlands.
