Developments in the housing market
Older people are leading longer, healthier lives. They also want to live independently at home for as long as they can. This has consequences for the housing market.
A growing number of older people
Because the population is ageing, more suitable housing is needed. The number of people aged 75 and over will double in the coming years and reach 2.6 million by 2040. On average, 75 years is the age when people tend to develop age-related health problems.
Older people want to live independently for longer
Older people who need care often want to continue living at home. They need a house that’s adapted to their needs, with on-call assistance, for instance from a local care provider.
More suitable homes needed for older people
To meet the growing demand, the Netherlands will need around 44,000 extra homes a year that are suitable for older people.
