Verhagen critical of remarks by Burmese honorary consul

On the instructions of foreign minister Maxime Verhagen, the Burmese honorary consul in the Netherlands has been taken to task for his recent comments. "It is simply not acceptable to gloss over large-scale human rights violations and the use of force against peaceful demonstrators," the minister said.

This was made plain to Herman Stevens, the Burmese honorary consul in the Netherlands. Mr Stevens publicly took a very mild stance on demonstrations being crushed by the military regime. Mr Verhagen is greatly concerned about the situation in Burma. He urges tighter economic sanctions against the junta, where possible backed by more countries. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has informed Mr Stevens what steps the Netherlands and the European Union have taken regarding Burma.
