The Netherlands continues to call for release of Nobel Prize winner
By awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to Liu Xiaobo, the Nobel Committee turns the spotlight on the important work of human rights defenders around the world.
Mr Liu was a leading author of Charter 08, which advocated the reform of China’s political system. As a result, he was arrested and sentenced, in 2009, to 11 years in prison for ‘inciting subversion of state power’.
‘The Netherlands will continue to call for the release of Mr Liu,’ foreign minister Maxime Verhagen said. ‘I hope that this award will strengthen the position of human rights defenders around the world.’
The Netherlands, like several EU member states and the European Union as a whole, has repeatedly urged the release of Liu Xiaobo and other Chinese human rights defenders.
