Rosenthal calls Aung San Suu Kyi election victor

Foreign minister Uri Rosenthal has issued a statement in response to the release of Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

‘Of course I’m glad that Ms Aung San Suu Kyi has been released,’ the minister said. ‘But we must never forget that she won the 1990 elections, and that her detention robbed her of her victory. In my eyes she is the legitimate victor of last week’s elections. Her release has political significance only if no strings are attached to it, and that is unclear. She must be allowed to exercise her civic rights without restrictions. I urge the Burmese government to guarantee her rights and to release all the other political prisoners.’
