Embassy in Nicaragua helping improve young people's lives
Staff at the Dutch embassy in Managua (Nicaragua) are helping improve the lives of adolescents and young adults by starting projects related to sexual and reproductive rights. One of the projects is being carried out in the village of El Tortugero, in the isolated RAAS marshland region on Nicaragua's Caribbean coast.
The Voz Joven programme, to which the project belongs, provides for clubhouses where sexual and reproductive rights can be addressed. Young people meet at the clubhouses, where they take part in various activities such as breakdancing and football. They are encouraged to plan their lives and start having children at a later age.
The Voz Joven programme is supported by the Dutch and Finnish embassies and implemented by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
