Ex-minister Max van der Stoel dies
On 23 April former Minister of Foreign Affairs Max van der Stoel passed away at the age of 86.
The present foreign minister, Uri Rosenthal, responded to his death with the following statement: ‘Max van der Stoel was a leading politician and gifted diplomat. The world has lost a great man with an impressive international record of service. Both personally and professionally he was committed to human rights and an ardent champion of human dignity. Internationally, he made an impression with his sound judgment, dedication and plain manner of speaking. He was an authority who stood above parties and never lost sight of the individual. My thoughts today are first and foremost with his loved ones.’
After serving as foreign minister, OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities and UN Human Rights Rapporteur for Iraq, he also played a prominent role as Minister of State. Max van der Stoel’s achievements made a major contribution to the international recognition and protection of fundamental human rights.
