Human rights ambassador visits Egypt

At the ‘Framing the Future’ conference in Cairo yesterday, Dutch human rights ambassador Lionel Veer said: ‘Freedom of expression, which includes internet freedom and freedom and variety of news media, is essential for a mature democracy. The Netherlands therefore supports knowledge sharing between Dutch and Arab professionals.’

At ‘Framing the Future’, human rights activists, journalists and bloggers came together to discuss internet freedom and human rights.

Today Ambassador Veer will meet in Cairo with his counterpart Layla Bahaa Eldin, communications and IT minister Magued Osman, the national human rights council and representatives of civil society organisations. The subject of these talks will be the human rights situation in Egypt, in particular the recent attacks on the Coptic church and the position of women.
