Knapen to invest in preventive health care and human rights in Africa

Minister for European Affairs and International Cooperation Ben Knapen told parliament on Wednesday that Dutch development spending in the areas of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and HIV/AIDS will be aimed particularly at prevention and human rights. A stronger focus will enable the Netherlands to heighten its profile as an advocate of human rights and SRHR for all.

Mr Knapen will set aside a total of 400 million euros from now until the end of 2014 for SRHR and for HIV/AIDS and health care. Half of this amount will go to SRHR programmes.

The Netherlands also finances HIV/AIDS programmes, including treatment programmes, through the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and will continue to do so in the future.

At the United Nations’ High-Level Meeting on AIDS in June, the Netherlands will call for a strong closing statement on human rights, the relationship between SRHR and HIV/AIDS, universal access to HIV prevention, care and treatment, and harm reduction.
