Knapen to visit Ethiopia

Minister for European Affairs and International Cooperation Ben Knapen will be in Ethiopia on a working visit from 6 to 8 June. During his visit he will meet with Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and representatives of non-governmental organisations working in the fields of human rights, humanitarian aid and reproductive health. Mr Knapen will also speak with Jean Ping, Chairperson of the African Union.

The main topics of discussion will be poverty reduction, progress on the Millennium Development Goals, human rights, the humanitarian situation in Ethiopia, Ethiopia’s bilateral and economic relations with the Netherlands and regional and international political developments. Mr Knapen will also visit a number of Ethiopian and Dutch agribusinesses.

The Netherlands spent over €40 million on development in Ethiopia in 2010 and has pledged €31.5 million for 2011.

The Netherlands is one of Ethiopia’s five largest export countries. Dutch companies, particularly in the agriculture.
