Rosenthal on the death of Yelena Bonner

Commenting on the death of Yelena Bonner, foreign minister Uri Rosenthal has praised her as a courageous and prominent figure in the Soviet Union’s dissident movement. ‘Together with her husband, Nobel Peace Prize winner Andrei Sakharov,’ he said, ‘she fought in very difficult times for her ideals on human rights and democracy.

They both paid a heavy personal price for their activism, and spent many years in internal exile. Like many others, they saw the fall of communism as a victory over evil. I have always greatly admired Yelena Bonner’s perseverance and commitment to democracy.’
