Knapen welcomes UNRWA chief

On Tuesday, Minister for European Affairs and International Cooperation Ben Knapen met with Commissioner-General Filippo Grandi of UNRWA, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Palestinian Territories, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan.

UNRWA provides Palestinian refugees with health care, education and social services. It enables half a million children to attend school, for instance, and runs microfinancing and job creation programmes to fight poverty among Palestinian refugees. In 2012, the Netherlands will give UNRWA €13 million.

The Palestinian Territories are one of the Netherlands' 15 development partner countries. The Netherlands is especially committed to strengthening security and the legal order, which, along with water, food security and sexual health, is one of Mr Knapen's four development priorities.
