Syrian ambassador ‘persona non grata’
The Netherlands has declared the Syrian ambassador ‘persona non grata’. This is a very serious diplomatic measure – he is no longer welcome at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and foreign minister Uri Rosenthal will no longer receive him.
The reason is the bloodbath in the Syrian town of Houla last weekend, and the Assad regime’s failure to comply with either the plan set out by UN Special Envoy Kofi Annan or UN Security Council resolutions.
‘It is no longer possible to work with a country led by such a president,’ said Mr Rosenthal. ‘That is why I have decided to declare the ambassador ‘persona non grata’.’
The Netherlands reached its decision in consultation with its EU partners. The Syrian ambassador will be officially notified.
