Draft agreement on EU accession to ECHR important step

‘The draft agreement on the European Union’s accession to the European Convention on Human Rights is an important step,’ says foreign minister Frans Timmermans. ‘If the agreement is officially adopted, the EU’s actions and laws will be brought under the jurisdiction of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. This will strengthen the protection of human rights in Europe.’

The draft accession agreement is the outcome of almost three years of negotiation between the 47 member states of the Council of Europe and the European Commission. The European Court of Justice in Luxembourg will now be asked to give its opinion. The final step will be for the EU and all the member states of the EU and the Council of Europe to ratify the agreement.
