Consul-General launches water portal

At a conference held by the Water Institute of South Africa (WISA) in East London last week, Consul-General David de Waal launched the Water Network web portal. The Water Network is a joint venture between WISA and the Netherlands Water Partnership. It was set up last April.

The aim is to increase the commitment of Dutch and South African partners, and to encourage new partnerships. The launch of the web portal marks the start of a year of activities.

They include ‘Moola for Amanzi’, a battle of concepts competition for South African students and SMEs. Working with professionals and Dutch students, the entrants will write a business plan with the aim of finding effective solutions to South Africa’s water and sanitation problems. The winner will be awarded a sum of money to start implementing the plan. The Dutch Embassy in Pretoria is acting as sponsor.

The prize will be presented during World Water Week in March 2011. That is also the start of the South Africa-Netherlands Water Tour through South Africa, when various activities will be organised at local, regional and national level. The aim is to increase awareness of South Africa’s water challenges and use Dutch expertise to meet them, thus promoting the Dutch water sector.
