Inaugural Geremek Lecture
The Netherlands and Poland have instituted the Professor Bronisław Geremek Lecture in honour of the former Polish foreign minister, Bronisław Geremek (1932-2008). The lecture’s name commemorates Professor Geremek’s contribution to bilateral relations between the two countries, and his political and academic achievements. The lecture will be delivered once a year, in Utrecht and Warsaw alternately.
The inaugural Geremek Lecture will take place at Utrecht University on Monday 13 December. The former Dutch foreign minister, Dr Ben Bot, will speak on ‘Bridging the divide between Eastern and Western Europe – Bronisław Geremek and the force of ideas. ‘
Bronisław Geremek was a key representative of the Polish trade union movement, Solidarity. As Minister of Foreign Affairs, he was responsible for negotiating Poland’s accession to the European Union. He was also the architect of Poland’s membership of NATO. In 2004 he was elected as a member of the European Parliament.
