'We have lost a great diplomat'
‘It was with great regret that I learned of the death of ambassador Richard Holbrooke. With his passing, we have lost a great diplomat. He will be remembered as the man who wrung peace in the Balkans from the Dayton negotiations. His experience and leadership will be missed. We owe him our deepest gratitude for his tireless efforts in recent years in contributing to the stabilisation of Afghanistan.’
This was foreign minister Uri Rosenthal’s response to the death of Richard Holbrooke, the US special envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Holbrooke’s career also included service as US ambassador to the United Nations and as US adviser to Indonesia. He was 69.
