Princess Máxima at launch of investors’ principles

Her Royal Highness Princess Máxima of the Netherlands and the Minister for European Affairs and International Cooperation, Ben Knapen, today attended the signing of the Principles for Investors in Inclusive Finance by an initial group of international investors. The principles will contribute to responsible financial services in the interests of low-income groups and small businesses.

Princess Máxima, in her role as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance, was one of the initiators of the investors’ principles. ‘Responsible financial services rest on three pillars: the first is legislation, the second is financial literacy and the third is self-regulation,’ the Princess said. Mr Knapen endorsed her stance. ‘The advantages and disadvantages of any financial product must be clear to every client, especially the most vulnerable. This is in the interests not just of clients but also of financial institutions themselves.’

The signing by 40 global investors took place at the Responsible Finance Forum hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague.
