The Netherlands supports second term for Ban Ki-moon
Minister of Foreign Affairs Uri Rosenthal supports the candidacy of Ban Ki-moon for a second term as Secretary-General of the United Nations. The Minister praised Mr Ban’s response to the crises in North Africa and Côte d’Ivoire: ‘Ban Ki-moon has made it abundantly clear that national governments should not ignore the legitimate demands of their people.’
In his first term Mr Ban boosted the UN’s capacity in the areas of peace and security, according to the Minister. ‘Protecting human rights is also one of his top priorities. He is actively committed to stopping violence against women and publicly defends the rights of gays and lesbians.’
The Netherlands hopes that Mr Ban will press ahead in his second term with the reform agenda for the United Nations. ‘The UN must become a more effective organisation, playing a central role in tackling global problems,’ said Mr Rosenthal.
After receiving a recommendation from the Security Council, the UN General Assembly will vote on granting Mr Ban a second term.
