Applying for a DigiD from outside the Netherlands

If you want to apply for a DigiD and you live outside the Netherlands, you can apply online at the DigiD website. You can then collect the activation code for your DigiD by visiting a DigiD desk in the Netherlands or outside the Netherlands. There is an exception for state pensioners living outside the Netherlands.

Who can apply for a DigiD from outside the Netherlands?

You can apply for a DigiD from outside the Netherlands if you meet the following conditions: 

  • you have a valid passport or identity card (a driving licence is not a valid form of identification);
  • you have a Burgerservicenummer – BSN (citizen service number);
  • you have a phone on which you can receive text messages;
  • you have an email address.

Process of applying for DigiD from outside the Netherlands

You can start the application for a DigiD from outside the Netherlands online. You will then receive an activation code. You can collect this code from a DigiD desk in the Netherlands or outside the Netherlands. There is an exception for AOW pensioners living outside the Netherlands.

Collecting your DigiD activation code in the Netherlands or outside the Netherlands

If you make a DigiD application from outside the Netherlands, you will receive a service desk code, which will be sent to you by email and text message. You must use this service desk code to collect your activation code within 30 days. You will need this to activate your DigiD account. You can collect your service desk code in one of the following ways:
