When are the school holidays in 2017 – 2018?

The following holiday dates in the 2017/2018 school year are for primary education, special education and secondary education. In secondary vocational education (MBO) and higher education, institutions are free to set their own holiday dates.

Autumn holiday 2017 (all dates inclusive)

  • Central and south regions: 14 October to 22 October 2017
  • North region: 21 October to 29 October 2017

These dates are advisory. Schools may change them, but they must publish their holiday dates in the school prospectus.

Christmas holiday 2017 – 2018

  • All regions: 23 December 2017 to 7 January 2018 inclusive

Spring holiday 2018 (all dates inclusive)

  • South region: 17 February to 25 February 2018
  • Central and north regions: 24 February to 4 March 2018

These dates are advisory. In 2018 the festival of Carnival (around 11 February) falls outside these advisory dates. Schools may schedule their spring holiday earlier if they wish, but they must publish their holiday dates in the school prospectus.

May holiday 2018

  • All regions: 28 April to 6 May 2017 inclusive.

Schools may extend the May holiday by one week if they wish. For the exact dates, check your school’s website or prospectus.

Summer holiday 2018 (all dates inclusive)

  • North region: 21 July to 2 September 2018
  • Central region: 14 July to 26 August 2018
  • South region: 7 July to 19 August 2018

School holiday regions

The Netherlands is divided into 3 school holiday regions: north, central and south.
