Verhagen speaks at Margraten memorial service
‘We should never forget our common past,’ said foreign minister Maxime Verhagen at the annual Memorial Day ceremony at the US cemetery in Margraten. ‘ It is our moral obligation to make sure that history does not repeat itself, that we continue the struggle for freedom in today’s world.’
The minister called transatlantic cooperation a firm and fundamental pillar of Dutch foreign policy. ‘We stand side by side with the United States,’ he said, adding that Europe and the US should strive to be a decisive force for good in the world. ‘We share the same values, we share the same dreams.’
On Memorial Day the US honours all the members of its armed forces who died during their military service. The cemetery at Margraten is the burial place for 8302 soldiers.
