Olympic Games an opportunity for improving human rights

The Netherlands regards the Olympic Games as an opportunity for human rights in China to feature more prominently on the international agenda. Foreign minister Maxime Verhagen expressed this view following talks with Dutch Olympic Committee president Erica Terpstra and State Secretary for Health, Welfare and Sport Jet Bussemaker.

’The sports world isn’t responsible for tackling human rights,’ said Verhagen, ‘but sports organisations, including the Dutch Olympic Committee, ought to draw the attention of their Chinese partners to the importance of a successful Olympic Games to their country’s image in the world. This is only possible if China accepts its responsibilities, nationally and internationally.’

At the request of the House of Representatives, the Government is organising a round-table conference on the Olympic Games and human rights in China, to which the Dutch Olympic Committee is invited.
