Cabinet approves bill on implementing anti-doping policy

Following a proposal by Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport Edith Schippers, the cabinet has decided to approve the bill on implementing anti-doping policy. The bill will constitute the first legal basis for doping controls in the Netherlands and make it possible to take a tougher stance. Currently, rules on doping controls are only laid down in the rules and regulations of individual sports associations. Accordingly, the practical implementation of doping policy is the responsibility of the associations themselves.

In providing a legal basis for conducting controls, the bill is vital in protecting the privacy and use of athletes' personal data. When the new act enters into force, the Doping Authority will become an autonomous administrative authority (ZBO) with the following tasks laid down in law:

  • Carrying out intelligence and investigative activities;
  • Providing information and advice on combating doping in sport and associated activities.

The bill will now be sent to the House of Representatives.
