Visas

This main section contains 3 sections:

When do I need a visa to travel abroad?

Whether you need a visa depends on where you go. Within Europe, an identity card or passport is usually enough. Outside Europe, you are more likely to need a visa. Check with the embassy or consulate of your country of destination whether you need a visa.

Travel documents within the European Union

You will need an identity card or passport if you are travelling within the European Union. And not just when you cross a border (for example, via an airport). You must also be able to show an identity card or passport if you are staying in a European country. A driving licence is not a valid form of ID outside of the Netherlands.

Some countries also require a visa. For more information, contact the embassy or consulate of the country of destination

Travel documents outside Europe

Countries outside Europe only accept a valid passport as proof of identity. Some countries require that your travel document will still be valid for a number of months when you enter or leave the country. For more information, contact the embassy or consulate of the country of destination

Visas

Many countries outside Europe require a visa as well as a passport. To find out whether you need a visa, and the conditions you have to meet, please contact the embassy or consulate of the country of destination. You can also apply to the embassy or consulate for the visa.
