Évaluation à mi-parcours du projet d’appui pour une gestion responsable et intégrée des sols PAGRIS

Burundi’s agriculture faces declining soil productivity due to erosion, soil acidity, loss of organic matter, and climate vulnerability.

The PAGRIS project (2020 – 2025) aimed to address these challenges through integrated soil fertility management, watershed management, and farmer self-promotion approaches, building on the earlier PAPAB project. The mid-term evaluation finds that PAGRIS is performing well: farmers are adopting soil conservation practices, increasing yields and incomes, and sharing knowledge with neighboring producers. Training and local collaboration have been effective, and women are actively involved in land management decisions. However, the evaluation recommends strengthening several areas, including promotion of certified seeds, water conservation, organic matter availability, liming (dolomite use), livestock investment, and coordination with other partners. It also highlights the potential to scale up PAGRIS approaches nationally through stronger collaboration under government leadership.
