Spatial planning

Spatial planning in the Netherlands involves the national strategy on the allocation of land and water resources for sustainable economic and social development. Coordinating national policy and strategies on spatial planning includes ensuring the implementation of EU regulations in national legislation.

The key land uses in the Netherlands are: residential, industrial and commercial activities, agricultural production, transport and infrastructure, as well as activities related to nature and biodiversity.

Provinces and municipalities are being given greater authority. They can decide on which location is the best for a new business park, for example. In reaching such decisions, they will examine all aspects of spatial planning, including accessibility, liveability and safety.
