144 patients deceased, 156 new patients, a total of 30,449 confirmed cases

Hospital admissions for 156 patients were reported today (current or previous). 144 deaths were reported. Not all of the hospital admissions or deaths occurred within the last 24 hours. Some patients are reported later. For this reason, the figures are often supplemented with data from previous days. This is particularly clear in the number of deaths reported after this Easter weekend.

30,449 confirmed COVID-19 patients have been reported to RIVM National Institute for Public Health and the Environment so far.

The figures for the last few days are still in line with the impression that COVID-19 spreading slower than if no measures had been taken.

Since not all COVID-19 patients are tested, the actual numbers in the Netherlands are higher than the numbers stated in the report.

Excess mortality

Total mortality in the Netherlands has risen sharply. Both in week 14 and in week 15 about 5,000 people died in the Netherlands. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and RIVM report this on the basis of provisional mortality figures (with a possible delay in registration due to the Easter holidays). That is 2,000 to 2,300 more deaths per week than we would expect for this time of year.

A significant part of these deaths is expected to be related to COVID-19. Exactly which part will only become clear later from the cause-and-effect registrations.  The total number of deceased persons per week as reported to Statistics Netherlands - regardless of the cause of death - provides a more complete picture of the situation in the Netherlands. This shows how important it is that people keep adhering to the measures. See CBS news message (in Dutch)
