Applying for housing benefit

If you are renting your home, you may be eligible to receive huurtoeslag (housing benefit). Huurtoeslag is a contribution towards the payment of your rent. The amount of the benefit you could receive depends on the amount of rent or your income, for example.

Eligibility for housing benefit

To be eligible for huurtoeslag, you must meet certain conditions. For example, you must be at least 18 years old and your combined income and assets must be below a certain level. The Belastingdienst website sets out all the conditions for huurtoeslag.

Check if you are entitled to huurtoeslag when your situation changes

Always check carefully whether you are entitled to huurtoeslag. Perhaps you were not entitled to huurtoeslag in the past. However, the conditions for eligibility may now have changed. As a result, you may now be entitled to huurtoeslag

Your personal situation may also have changed:

  • Your income has decreased;
  • The composition of your household has changed. For example, you are living with fewer housemates.

Has your personal situation changed? In that case, you may be entitled to huurtoeslag.

Do you want to know whether you are entitled to huurtoeslag? You can make a test calculation for benefits at the Belastingdienst website (in Dutch).
